In the summer of 2007, Susan Walvius and Michelle Warciniak were coaching basketball at the University of South Carolina. They had just finished a long day of teaching at camp and were sitting in the gym, exhausted. Susan was wearing her favorite performance apparel and said to Michelle, a star athlete and fitness fanatic, “I would love to have bed sheets made out of this stuff.” Without blinking an eye, Michelle said, “Let’s do it.” So began their adventure to transform the bedding category and help people get a better night’s sleep.
As Coaches, Susan and Michelle were inspired by the feel, breathability and quick-dry features of performance fabrics. Unlike soak-drenched cotton t-shirts and shorts, performance fabrics keep athletes cool, dry and comfortable. After two years of research and development, they started SHEEX with one simple goal in mind: To help people sleep better so they can perform at their peak the next day. The outcome is an entrepreneurial success story that probably inspires most athletes to question, “Why didn’t I think of that?!”
A couple of years ago, I put SHEEX to the test when I was having trouble sleeping. I wanted to remedy the situation without relying on a sleeping pill. The soft, comfortable fabric regulated my body temperature and dramatically improved my quality of sleep. Soon thereafter, all other sheets in the house were replaced with these comfy performance fabrics. Our visiting guests marvel that these sheets keep them cool and comfortable, even on the hottest, most humid summer nights.
Sleep offers important benefits for health and beauty. Sleeping better and longer has been shown to lead to improvements in important areas such as heart rate, mood, weight loss, energy levels and athletic performance. A commitment to improving your sleep quality is about more than just sleep itself–it’s a commitment to improving your overall health & wellness so you can perform at your peak each and every day. According to the American Sleep Research Institute, “While a person sleeps, the body is rejuvenated. Cells are repaired, the immune system is strengthened and mental functions are sharpened.”
Many steps can pave the way toward better sleep when designing a healthy life with style. One step is by trying new sheets or SHEEX. What steps do you take to improve your sleep quality so that you can perform at your peak the next day?
