Dust mite remedies aren’t something I would associate with an island vacation. Mosquito repellant is something I associate with vacations. On a post-hurricane trip to Turks & Caicos, I found mosquito bites on my eyebrows! Now my suitcase always includes mosquito repellant . It wasn’t until a recent trip to Hawaii that I learned about dust mites.
Dust mites thrive in humid areas, and the most common places they thrive is in mattresses and furniture. According to the Mayo Clinic,
dust mites are so small you can’t see them with the human eye-they can only be seen with a microscope.

Dust mites can cause an allergic reaction in some individuals that is similar to hay fever and asthma, making it difficult to breathe. Do you wake up to sneezing or a runny nose? While on vacation, or at home, dust mite remedies may need to be a part of your healthy future!
An easy way to get rid of dust mites is with the following 5 items:
- 1 cup of Baking Soda
- 1o drops of Essential Oil (this is enough for a queen size bed.) Use an essential oil that will further repel dust mites, such as lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint oil, clove or rosemary.
- Sifter
- Mason jar with lid
- Vacuum
- Remove linens and wash in hot water.
- Add the baking soda and essential oils to a Mason jar. Shake to distribute the oils.
- Put the baking soda mixture in a sifter and sift across your mattress. (Turn OFF your ceiling fan!)
- Leave the mixture on for an hour, or longer for better results.
- After an hour, use a vacuum hose to remove the mixture from your mattress.
Make your bed with a clean mattress pad & clean sheets. While you’re at it, put your pillow in the dryer on high heat for 20 minutes. You can repeat this process every 2-3 months, or as often as needed. These dust mite remedies are helpful at home or on vacation. Just remember to pack essential oils in your suitcase to maintain your healthy, stylish life.
