Unrealistic Expectations

Unrealistic expectations can lead to disappointment with fitness results. When the motivation strikes to begin an exercise program, it’s natural to put forth a strong effort. Depending on what’s driving this motivation, the possibility of physical change is exciting. However, disappointment can happen if unrealistic expectations are set from the beginning.
Many factors lead people toward starting an exercise program. I’ve worked with motivated clients who start their 90-day in-home workout programs with gusto. They commit to taking the big steps of getting rid of all junk food, buying new workout clothes and recording their measurements. They even take the most important step of posing for the (dreaded) “before” photos!
Near the 30-day mark, unrealistic expectations often set in. I start to hear complaints about a lack of visible results. Perhaps the scale hasn’t budged much, if at all. It may appear that the effort from the last 30 days hasn’t made a dent.
It’s important to remember that it will take time for a body to change, especially if it’s been abused by years of unhealthy habits. This new healthy lifestyle is just beginning! So many good things are happening, but physical changes can take time and effort. It varies for everyone, but most physical changes start to happen between 60-90 days of consistent exercise, combined with a healthy diet. Instead of focusing on the scale, I suggest my clients ask themselves the following questions: Am I sleeping better at night? Do I have more energy during the day? Can I do one more push-up than when I started? Focusing on these types of expectations will keep them moving forward in a positive direction.
