Walking is great exercise. It’s one of the best exercise fitness programs, especially if you are easing into a new fitness routine. If you’ve ever had an injury, or if you’re someone who just doesn’t like to exercise, walking is one of the best ways to get back in the game. Add a dog to the mix, and you’re ready for commitment! The simple exercise routine of walking my dog is something I’ve grown to look forward to doing every day.
Walk your dog and you’ll soon find that you have a personal trainer who is relentless about workouts! If you walk in the morning, you’ll experience the exhilarating combination of fresh air and exercise. The physical benefits of exercise are good for both of you. It makes me happy knowing that we are both contributing to each other’s health, fitness and well-being. We meet new friends–canines and humans.
Another great benefit of having a dog with you on walks is that it changes your view of the world. I see more of any location with my dog than I would see otherwise. I’m taken down paths I wouldn’t necessarily see if I was walking by myself. Often times, I’m stopped in my tracks as she stops to sniff at various flowers or trees…what we call “reading the newspaper” as she brings our walk to a halt. Some days it’s a test of my patience, and other days I’m reminded of the old adage to “stop and smell the roses.”
I prefer to get more workouts in during the week than just my dog walks. However, any exercise counts in my book. Getting outdoors is great for the soul. Can you recall the last time you saw a sunrise and a sunset in the same day? When you choose to exercise for mental health and well being, this can be a common occurrence.
When there’s a light breeze and the sun is setting on the horizon, walking with my best friend makes everything right with the world. It’s hard to believe that this free exercise plan may be one of the best exercise plans. I can’t think of a better way to ease into fitness. Can you?
